Keanu

ring-tailed lemur

Birth date: ~2005
Arrival date: 2006
Departed: 2024-04-22

More information
close
  • Previous home details:  Keanu came with two brothers, Bandit, and Smokey who died Jan 2016.
  • Companions: After Kye died in April 2020, Kizmet was moved to be with with Bandit and Keanu and into a larger enclosure where they had more room to explore. Kizmet has since died as well (Mar 2022), leaving just Bandit and Keanu again.
  • Personality: All the ring-tails are curious, showing interest but not fear when things are going on nearby.
  • Favourite Activity: Watching what is going on! Spending time outside, sunbathing!!!!!!
  • Favourite Food: In the early spring, they all love their dandelions, and some tree branches with leaves on them are always welcome! Their favourite treats are dried cranberries.
  • Cause of death: Humanely euthanized due to extensive cancer.

Cody

crab-eating macaque

Birth date: 2007-05-11
Arrival date: 2018-05-02
Departed: 2024-02-09

  • Previous home details:  Cody came from a Canadian research facility along with Pugsley and Cedric (collectively 'the boys').   This was a precedent setting retirement for lab monkeys, who are normally euthanized at the end of their use to research. He got his name because he reminded lab employees of a Kodiak bear.
  • Condition upon arrival: Good.
  • Progress: At the research facility they were kept separately in 4-feet square cages. Here they were able to sleep together, groom each other and swing on their favourite platform and catch flies.
  • Personality: At first, Cody was less confident and more tentative, but later he assumed the intermediate role in the hierarchy.
  • Favourite Activity: The favourite spot for ‘the boys’ is on their outdoor platform which swings.  They have learned to propel their weight to make it swing and they groom each other up there, play with new toys and sometimes they eat their dinner up there.
  • Favourite Food: Corn-on-the cob, and a variety of fruit and vegetables.
  • Cause of death: Humanely euthanized due to kidney failure.

Rudy

Birth date: Estimated late 2011 or early 2012
Arrival date: 2013-02-11
Departed: 2023-08-03

  • Previous home details:  Rudy was confiscated by animal services from an exotic animal breeder. Before that, we know nothing about her background.
  • Condition upon arrival: When she arrived at Story Book Farm, Rudy was emaciated, and her liver was in first stages of shut down. Because she was in poor health, she had lost much of her hair, so she was bald in several areas on her body, and her tail was completely bald except for the very tip. This could also have been a result of self-mutilation because of the stress suffered in being taken away from her mother as a baby. She was also very hungry. She scratched continually and sneezed intermittently as well. She arrived with the birdcage where she was kept while in captivity, which did not give her much exercise room.
  • Progress: After a trip to the vet, it was determined that Rudy was 1 to 1.5 years old. The sneezing was not due to any illness, but perhaps a reaction to the humidity, and the scratching was not due to mites, but rather probably a boredom-associated, or stress-related behaviour which contributed to her baldness. She became much furrier over the next few weeks and her tail was much improved. She ate well and gained weight. She is very active in her new enclosure and she jumps, leaps and balances just as a squirrel monkey should. She has learned to trust her caregivers, although she is still shy when there are many people around and prefers to stay in her nest box and look out at whatever is happening around her. Rudy loves her outdoor enclosure and is constantly going back and forth between inside and outside. She can even close or open her own door, so her caretakers must always be aware of where she is. She moves very quickly. She is much less shy now too - curious about people, wanting to know what is happening around her. She was friendly with her neighbour Cheeko.
  • Changes: In January 2019, Rudy was moved to a larger enclosure next to Cheeko, though Cheeko has since passed. Rudy was recently diagnosed as diabetic. We are currently trying to manage it with diet, before using insulin, if needed.
  • Personality: Rudy is a curious and inquisitive little girl. She used to watch her neighbour, Cheeko, and she responds to the people who care for her. She is very quick, so must be watched carefully each time her area is opened for cleaning, food or water. As she is next to the kitchen, she loves to watch as meals are being prepared, and she chirps when she sees her favourite foods.
  • Favourite Activity: Rudy has been given many toys to play with and she seems to enjoy the challenge of some of the enrichment devices. She watches what is going on around her, and likes to bounce around her enclosure and swing on the hose that has been strung across her area. And of course, she loves dinner time!
  • Favourite Food: Rudy really seems to enjoy grapes, but unfortunately she rarely gets them now because of her diabetes. Mealworms and crickets are a hit as well as hard-boiled eggs and bell pepper.

  • Previous home details:  Pugsley came from a Canadian research facility along with Cody and Cedric (collectively 'the boys'). This was a precedent setting retirement for lab monkeys, who are normally euthanized at the end of their use to research. Pugsley got his name because he reminded the lab employees of a pug, with his squished nose and bad teeth.
  • Condition upon arrival:  Good, considering his background.
  • Progress: At the research facility they were kept separately in 4-feet square cages. Now they are able to sleep together, groom each other and swing on their favourite platform and catch flies. He now looks to Cody for direction. As the smallest of the three, he is lowest in the hierarchy.
  • Personality: He is captivated by mirrors and aggressive around food.
  • Favourite Activity: The favourite spot for ‘the boys’ is on their outdoor platform which swings.  They have learned to propel their weight to make it swing and they groom each other up there, play with new toys and sometimes they eat their dinner up there. Pugsley enjoys playing with mirrors, and uses them to monitor the other two. Pugsley is a sun worshipper and loves to close his eyes and sun bathe.
  • Favourite Food: Peanut butter sandwiches, and a variety of fruit and vegetables.

Lexy

Japanese macaque

Birth date: ~2002
Arrival date: 2008
Departed: 2022-04-09

  • Previous home details:  Lexy's first experience with people was as a pet. She and another female macaque were privately owned, but as they matured, they became too much for their owners to handle. At that point, they were given to a roadside zoo in Ontario. Lexy and the other female were housed with Julien, until Lexy came to SBFPS to be a companion to another Japanese macaque, Yoshi, who died in 2009.
  • Condition upon arrival:  Lexy was a very aggressive animal. She dominated the other macaques at her previous residence, but she submitted to Yoshi and got along well with him. She was not friendly with people and displayed aggressive tendencies towards them.
  • Progress: Lexy was still aggressive, but while she and Julien shared a space, she became calmer towards her human caregivers but was dominant over Julien. Since Julien died (2020-01-20), it was decided to try to house her with Max and Darwin.  That introduction has been a great success and now surprisingly Lexy is submissive to Max.  However, Lexy was not willing to accept Mishaa to the group.
  • Personality: Lexy likes dolls and carries them with her as a comfort. She had less need of it while Julien shared her enclosure and she had another of her own species to groom. She sometimes appeared to be a little jealous of the attention that Julien got as he was very mild-mannered.
  • Favourite Activity: Lexy still likes to carry her dolls around and groom them but she also has mutual grooming sessions with Darwin and Max.
  • Favourite Food: Lexy loves her bananas and peanuts!

  • Previous home details:  Kizmet was the daughter (an accidental birth) of Kye (male - died Apr 2020) and Razzle (female - died Dec 2014).
  • Progress: Since Kye's passing, Bandit, Keanu and Kizmet have been moved together into a larger enclosure where they have more room to explore.
  • Personality: All the ring-tails are curious, showing interest but not fear when things are going on nearby. There was constant vocalising between the ring-tails in the main section of the barn and the two boys (Buddy (died Dec 2018) and Remi (died May 2021) in the kitchen, and the Brown Lemurs (died 2014), as though they were passing messages to each other. When it was dinner time, Kye often had to wait until Razzle and Kizmet allowed him to feed - the girls are in charge in Lemur land - so dinner is split into three dishes so everyone gets to eat at the same time.
  • Favourite Activity: Watching what is going on! Spending time outside, sunbathing!!!!!!
  • Favourite Food: In the early spring, they all love their dandelions, and some tree branches with leaves on them are always welcome! Their favourite treats are dried cranberries.

  • Previous home details:  For several years, Cheeko lived in a bird cage in a garden centre in Ontario. He had no outdoor space and little in the way of comforts. Previous to this, we have no information about Cheeko's history.
  • Condition upon arrival:  Cheeko did not use his prehensile tail as a capuchin should, perhaps because these muscles had atrophied from lack of use. His teeth were just stubs, owing in part to the diet he was fed. He must have broken one of his fingers at one point, and it healed itself, but no longer bends. He was timid and wary when he first arrived.
  • Progress: Cheeko became very comfortable at SBFPS. He still did not use his tail, but he was very chatty and curious. His eyes were brighter and his fur was healthier. He loved to visit and chat with the people in the barn when they were around his enclosure. After arrival at the sanctuary, most of his teeth had to be removed due to disease and lack of use because of the diet he was fed at his previous home which consisted of bacon, baby food and boiled eggs.
  • Personality: Cheeko defended his people and would make a fuss if he thought that one of the other residents might cause anyone any harm. He was always on the move - up and down, in and out - covering every inch of the space available to him.
  • Favourite Activity: Cheeko loved his mirror - he spent a lot of time talking to his friend there, and he always shared his meals with that friend!
  • Favourite Food: Cheeko loved his avocado - the only thing that he would not share with his friend in the mirror!

  • Previous home details:  Remi and Buddy arrived together. They may have been brothers, but that is not known for sure. They lived in a pet store in BC, where they were housed in a birdcage that had been partitioned into two spaces.
  • Condition upon arrival:  It was necessary to separate them as they showed aggressive tendencies towards each other. They were both tiny on arrival, weighing in at about 4.5 pounds each. Buddy showed very aggressive behaviours. Remi was very timid, hiding under a blanket in order to feel some security.
  • Progress: Remi became much more comfortable, still sleeping in his blanket, but much less timid overall. He gained weight, had brighter eyes and fur, and made full use of the space available to him. The two boys were housed in adjacent enclosures next to the kitchen, where they could watch everything going on. They loved the outdoor areas they had for the first time in their lives.
  • Changes: Buddy passed away in December 2018, and Remi was distraught, often calling out for him. In January 2019, we moved Rudy (Squirrel monkey) into Buddy's old enclosure next to Remi. This gave Rudy more room, and gave Remi a new companion. Remi was euthanized when the cancer he was suffering from became too aggressive and he was no longer comfortable.
  • Favourite Activity: Remi enjoyed having his head and back scratched, and would sit comfortably while being scratched.
  • Favourite Food: Dried cranberries were a special treat.

  • Personality: Cedric is quite passive and doesn’t exert much authority in most situations. He is generally 'laid-back'.
  • Favourite Activity: The favourite spot for ‘the boys’ is on their outdoor platform which swings.  They have learned to propel their weight to make it swing and they groom each other up there, play with new toys and sometimes they eat their dinner up there. • Previous home details:  Julien was born at a roadside zoo where he spent the first few years of his life on display, first with his family group, and later with two other young females. He was bullied by the girls who were older than him. One of those macaques, Lexy, came to SBFPS in 2006. Julien and the other female escaped from their enclosure in 2008. The female died in the escape attempt, and Julien was on the run for 12 days. When he was recaptured, he came to SBFPS.
  • Condition upon arrival:  Julien had severe psychological issues on arrival. He was very agitated and would mutilate himself by biting himself if humans looked at him.
  • Progress: In 2011, Julien was neutered. In early 2012, he and Lexy were put back together to share an enclosure. Julien was not nearly as aggressive then as he was previously. He became much calmer and would make eye contact with his caregivers. He even requested a scratch from time to time. The change in his personality was astounding - and he was a calming influence on Lexy as well.
  • Personality: Julien went from having highly self-mutilating tendencies to being a curious and much more gentle monkey. He often made the little murmuring sounds that signify contentedness. He learned to go outside into the tunnel so we could safely clean and put food into the enclosure.
  • Favourite Activity: Julien loved his swing. It was always a favourite spot for him, and once together he and Lexy would share one.
  • Favourite Food: Julien loved his bananas - and if he could, he would get Lexy's before she did!

  • Favourite Activity: Buddy enjoyed a scratch, and would sit comfortably while someone he had come to trust gave him one.
  • Favourite Food: Dried cranberries were a special treat.

  • Previous home details:  George came from a farm in Manitoba. When he arrived with Susie, it was understood that after George's death, Susie would return to the farm. But George did not cooperate in this, and it was agreed that the two could stay on at SBFPS. George and Susie were very close friends and would protect each other from any and all perceived threats.
  • Condition upon arrival:  George's health was poor on arrival. He had much difficulty getting around his enclosure - he could barely walk and had no muscle power to use for swinging. He suffered from various bacterial infections over the next year or so.
  • Progress: Over the 15 years he was at the sanctuary George became a firm favourite with volunteers and visitors alike. He welcomed scratches and massages as he raised his arm in typical spider monkey fashion. He learned to trust and enjoy new toys and additions to his enclosure and soon was able to use his prehensile tail again.
  • Personality: George was very vocal, and talked to everyone who came into the barn. He chortled when he got his favourite foods and he salivated uncontrollably when he was given a lime. He was one expressive monkey.  George did not know meanness - only love. The sanctuary will be a much quieter home without George.
  • Favourite Activity: He loved to sit in the sun as his black coat absorbed the warmth. His vantage point from his enclosure allowed him to see and comment on all the comings and goings in the sanctuary.
  • Favourite Food: Lime.

  • Previous home details:  Sweet Pea came to the sanctuary in 2006 from a private zoo where she had no access to the outdoors and daylight was limited.
  • Condition upon arrival:  She was shy and fearful and had boredom-associated behaviours.
  • Progress: In the intervening years she learned to trust and to enjoy walking and sleeping outdoors on the grass.
  • Changes: In 2016, we built much larger outdoor enclosures for both Pea and Pierre where they had space to run for the first time in both their lives. During her last year, Pea and Pierre were cohabiting - grooming each other and sharing their space. Darwin became a bit of a surrogate son as he too started to share their space. At the sanctuary we strive on a daily basis to make the lives of all our monkeys better than when they arrived. Until the very end Sweet Pea was lavished with love and great care by our wonderful medical team and volunteers. We miss her tremendously. Pierre will undoubtedly miss her.
  • Personality: Sweet Pea was a very sweet yet sometimes sneaky monkey. Pierre tended to be dominant when it came to food so sometimes we would give her extra treats while he was out of sight. She would quickly stuff all the treats into her cheek pouches so that she could savour them unhurried later. Sweet Pea was also a tease. She would tease Darwin with her stuff - offering him something and then complaining when he took it.
  • Favourite Activity: Sweet Pea enjoyed her comforts. She loved to lie on top of her monster stuffies and grooming and sleeping on her fur coats.

  • Previous home details:  Amigo, Pablo and Sanchez came from a zoo in Western Canada where they were not wanted in the revamping of the marmoset colony there. Mickey was rescued by a friend of Story Book Farm when the pet store where she lived closed. Arrangements were made for Mickey to join the SBFPS family.
  • Condition upon arrival:  Amigo was in good shape. Pablo had some wounds to his face and had lost part of one eyelid. Sanchez was missing a piece of his tail. His death was due to a bone marrow suppression and organ failure consistent with old age.
  • Progress: Pablo and Amigo got on well together, sharing an enclosure - until the arrival of Mickey! The female caused them to fight each other, so they had to be separated.  Sadly, they have all passed now.
  • Personality: Marmosets are all curious and want to know what is going on everywhere. They are also very vocal, emitting cackles, shrieks and high pitched trills. All of them like attention and enjoy moments when their human caregivers spend some time with them.
  • Favourite Activity: Amigo loved his mirror and spent lots of time admiring the handsome marmoset there.
  • Favourite Food: All three loved crunchy things - but above all else, they searched out the mealworms or crickets in their food bowls. If there were no insects, they would go for the mini-marshmallow first. Amigo loved a little corn on the cob.

  • Previous home details:  Komoto arrived from a zoo in Ontario, to be a companion to the Ring-tailed lemur who was already at SBFPS. Although originally on loan, Komoto became a permanent resident. When Rosie arrived from the same zoo, she and Komoto became companions.
  • Condition upon arrival:  Komoto was used to living in a small space, and for the first while, he ran in circles around a stump on the floor of his enclosure. Eventually he learned to climb and jump as a lemur should. An accident resulted in the amputation of one forelimb - but that did not stop Komoto from getting wherever he wanted to go. Rosie was healthy and fit when she arrived at the Farm.
  • Progress: Rosie and Komoto were good companions for as long as they were together. Neither was shy, although Rosie was a little more assertive than Komoto. The two of them groomed each other and snuggled up against each other to sleep.
  • Personality: Rosie loved to be right at the door when dinner was about to be served. She loved to be the first to get her face into the food bowl and would reach out for any treat that might be offered to her. Treats offered to Komoto usually had to be fed directly into his mouth since he only had one hand, and he used that to hang on!
  • Favourite Activity: Rosie and Komoto loved to be outside and loved especially those first spring days when their outdoor area became accessible to them.
  • Favourite Food: Both loved all sorts of fruit - but grapes were probably one of their favourites!

  • Previous home details:  Originally from a large Ontario zoo, Nan went to a smaller zoo where she mothered several offspring. She eventually went to live with the owner of that zoo. She and Chelsea were housed together and came together to SBFPS.
  • Condition upon arrival: Nan was in good condition when she arrived, although she was elderly.
  • Progress: Nan continued to do well. She was almost blind, so moved cautiously around her space. But she knew exactly where everything was, so she had no difficulties getting around. She moved slowly, due to her age, but she was very determined.
  • Personality: Nan loved the feel of the warm sun on her hair and would spend hours sitting just outside the door that led to the "patio" of her enclosure. Since her sight was poor, her caregivers tried to make sure any enrichment given to her was easily accessible.
  • Favourite Activity: Sitting in the sun. Eating the seeds that she found in the fresh straw or hay she was given.
  • Favourite Food: Nan loved her lettuce and would often be given a whole head just for a treat!

  • Previous home details:  Susie was probably a pet originally, but given up to a zoo when her owners no longer wanted her. Over time, details are lacking, but she ended up on a farm in Manitoba with George. After George's death, she was expected to return to Manitoba, but since George did not die, it was agreed that both monkeys would stay at SBFPS.
  • Condition upon arrival:  Susie was in poor health on her arrival. She suffered from various bacterial infections over the next year or so. Her teeth were rotten, and caused her to have abscesses on the right side of her face. The bad teeth were extracted and Susie recovered.
  • Progress: Susie's health was generally good, although winter was a tough time for her - she seemed to miss the sun. But she responded to extra nutrition in the form of a liquid supplement.
  • Personality: Susie was a sprightly little old lady and loved to know what was going on. She generally came over to greet people as they arrived in the Barn, and if she was feeling particularly friendly toward you, she might extend her tail around you and give you a hug. She was fiercely protective of George.

  • Previous home details:  Chelsea was born at a small Ontario zoo, but she eventually went to live with one of the owners of that zoo.
  • Condition upon arrival:  Chelsea was in good health.
  • Progress: Chelsea had been diagnosed with a thyroid problem, and for the last two years she was on medication for this. As a result she lost a great deal of weight - she got around her enclosure much more quickly, climbing and playing and being much more active in general.
  • Personality: Chelsea loved boots and shoes - she had dozens of them. And she had favourites amongst them as well - she would be upset and scream at you if you attempted to remove one of her favourites on any given day - which made it a challenge to wash them occasionally. She loved to throw her shoes and her ball around when the old straw had been removed from the floor of her enclosure. She developed relationships with some of her caregivers - sometimes she wanted to hold their hand or groom their arms for a while. And she loved to watch movies on TV - she would get excited when she saw something she liked or she would scream when she saw something she did not like.
  • Favourite Activity: Playing with her ball, or a hula hoop. Tossing her shoes up in the air or giving them a ride on her back. Watching TV. Supervising the cleaning of her enclosure.
  • Favourite Food: Chelsea loved her watermelon - and just about anything sweet. She was mastering drinking from a bottle or a glass, liked her pomegranate juice!
