Lemurs

Lemurs come from Madagascar

Ricky

black lemur

Birth date: ~2006
Arrival date: 2021-09-22

  • Previous home details:  His road to us was a series of collaborations. He was seized from his home as a pet by Animal Welfare Services. While we prepared for his arrival, he was kept in quarantine at the Toronto Zoo. Even though he was a pet, he was never given a name so AWS gave him the name Maverick. As a nod to AWS and to animal lover Ricky Gervais, we decided on the name Ricky.
  • Condition upon arrival:  His coat was in very poor condition, he was a little under weight and had two broken teeth.
  • Progress: During his life as a pet, Ricky was apparently fed just bananas and table scraps. Since his arrival he has learned to love bell peppers and cauliflower among the fresh fruit and vegetables he is now offered. After just a few weeks, his coat is already showing signs of improvement. He is also enjoying the outdoors during the warm weather, plus he already answers to his name.
  • Personality: He is very curious, and wants to see what is going on around him. Since he is used to being around people, we placed him in an enclosure near the kitchen where there is the most activity. He is very curious and wants to see what is going on around him but when he wants some quiet time he climbs into his sleep box.
  • Favourite activity: Watching all the goings-on at the sanctuary and learning to manipulate different forms of enrichment.
  • Favourite food: Raisins and dried cranberries.

Mojo

ruffed lemur

Birth date: unknown
Arrival date: 2019-12-21
(with Nora)

  • Previous home details:  Nora and Mojo came together. They were rescued from a zoo in Quebec that was closed due to abuse and neglect of over 200 animals.
  • Condition upon arrival:  Good.
  • Progress: They have settled in well.
  • Favourite activity:  They particularly enjoy climbing along the ceiling in their indoor and outdoor enclosures and love to hang upside down.
  • Favourite food:  Like all monkeys and lemurs they love sweet things such as grapes, raisins and dried cranberries.
  • Personality:  Mojo can be a little aggressive but Nora, as the alpha in the relationship, stands her ground.

Arrival date: Bandit & Keanu 2006

  • Previous home details:  Bandit and Keanu are brothers and came with a third brother Smokey, who died Jan 2016.
  • Companions: After Kye died in April 2020, Kizmet was moved to be with with Bandit and Keanu and into a larger enclosure where they had more room to explore. Kizmet has since died as well (Mar 2022), leaving just Bandit and Keanu again.
  • Personality: All the ring-tails are curious, showing interest but not fear when things are going on nearby.
  • Favourite Activity: Watching what is going on! Spending time outside, sunbathing!!!!!!
  • Favourite Food: In the early spring, they all love their dandelions, and some tree branches with leaves on them are always welcome! Their favourite treats are dried cranberries.
  • Wish list from staff: More enrichment devices that the lemurs can use - they don't have as much finger-agility as the other primates.

Bob, Collette and Marwood

Birth date: Unknown

  • Previous home details:  Bob, Collette and Marwood came together. They were rescued from a zoo in Quebec that was closed due to abuse and neglect of over 200 animals.
  • Condition upon arrival:  They arrived at the sanctuary without names and, except for Colette, without complete tails. There was also evidence of them having suffered from frostbite at their previous home because of partially missing digits.
  • Progress: They have settled in well and make the most of the large space they share with various platforms, sleep boxes and branches to climb.
  • Favourite activity: They enjoy working with various enrichment devices to get at the treats. In the summer they love to sunbathe.
  • Favourite food:  Anything sweet but we limit their intake so they don’t gain too much weight.
