New World Monkeys

New world monkeys are those that come from Central and South America.

Mr. Jenkins

black-handed spider monkey

Birth date: Unknown
Arrival date: 2002

  • Previous home details:  Mr. Jenkins began life with people as a pet, then was sold to train to be a movie star. However, he would not perform as required, so he was sold to a petting zoo where he was to be used in an educational program with children. He was too unpredictable for this work, so he went to auction. When he was not sold for the price that was wanted, he was returned to the petting zoo. SBFPS contacted the zoo, and over time they agreed to retire Jenkins to the Sanctuary.
  • Condition upon arrival:  Mr. Jenkins' health was good when he arrived at SBFPS, but his behaviour was unruly and unpredictable.
  • Progress: Jenkins gradually became less of a grabber/pincher. Because of space that has opened up, we have been able to extend his indoor and outdoor enclosures to give him more space to swing and jump.
  • Personality:  Jenkins loves to catch people passing by when they are not expecting it! He likes to hold hands with his care-givers. And when one of the dogs used to wander into his part of the barn, he would howl up a storm!
  • Favourite Activity: EATING!!!!  He loves to swing and jump to different areas of his enclosures.
  • Favourite Food: Jenkins loves bananas and celery
  • Wishlist from staff: More time for his "trainers" to work with him to keep making improvements in his behaviours. Jenkins would probably also benefit from the company of a female of his own species - not for breeding purposes, but for companionship.

Pockets Warhol

white-capped capuchin

Birth date: 1992-04-01
Arrival date: Fall 2009

  • Previous home details:  Pockets was a well-loved and well-cared-for pet in British Columbia. He had generous space, a good diet, access to TV and even a pet guinea pig! His owner searched for a safe environment for Pockets' retirement, and located SBFPS. She brought Pockets to the sanctuary, saw him safely settled in his new home and keeps in regular contact with us.
  • Condition upon arrival:  Pockets was in very good condition upon arrival - it did not take long for him to settle in to his new home.
  • Progress: Pockets continues to be an active and expressive resident. He has become well known as a painter, having had several shows and sold many canvases. He is mischievous, always waiting for someone who is not paying attention to get within the reach of his long arms or strong tail. He is quick, always on the move...and very smart!
  • Personality: Pockets will take advantage of any mistake that a human might make - so his enclosure has to be well secured...if he can figure out how to open the door, he will. He loves to play and interact with his caregivers - painting, playing ball, just about any activity that involves two. He also likes a gentle scratch from time to time, or to have his tail gently petted.
  • Favourite Activity: Painting (he is famous as Pockets Warhol and his paintings are available on-line!), playing ball and doing anything that uses his hands.
  • Favourite Foods: Cashews.  Pockets loves all the fruits that appear in his dinner. And he likes the occasional gummy bear too!
  • Wishlist from staff: More painting supplies - big canvases, non-toxic kids' paint, small soft quilts.

Rudy

squirrel monkey

Birth date: Estimated late 2011 or early 2012
Arrival date: 2013-02-11

  • Previous home details:  Rudy was confiscated by animal services from an exotic animal breeder. Before that, we know nothing about her background.
  • Condition upon arrival: When she arrived at Story Book Farm, Rudy was emaciated, and her liver was in first stages of shut down. Because she was in poor health, she had lost much of her hair, so she was bald in several areas on her body, and her tail was completely bald except for the very tip. This could also have been a result of self-mutilation because of the stress suffered in being taken away from her mother as a baby. She was also very hungry. She scratched continually and sneezed intermittently as well. She arrived with the birdcage where she was kept while in captivity, which did not give her much exercise room.
  • Progress: After a trip to the vet, it was determined that Rudy was 1 to 1.5 years old. The sneezing was not due to any illness, but perhaps a reaction to the humidity, and the scratching was not due to mites, but rather probably a boredom-associated, or stress-related behaviour which contributed to her baldness. She became much furrier over the next few weeks and her tail was much improved. She ate well and gained weight. She is very active in her new enclosure and she jumps, leaps and balances just as a squirrel monkey should. She has learned to trust her caregivers, although she is still shy when there are many people around and prefers to stay in her nest box and look out at whatever is happening around her. Rudy loves her outdoor enclosure and is constantly going back and forth between inside and outside. She can even close or open her own door, so her caretakers must always be aware of where she is. She moves very quickly. She is much less shy now too - curious about people, wanting to know what is happening around her. She was friendly with her neighbour Cheeko.
  • Changes: In January 2019, Rudy was moved to a larger enclosure next to Cheeko, though Cheeko has since passed. Rudy was recently diagnosed as diabetic. We are currently trying to manage it with diet, before using insulin, if needed.
  • Personality: Rudy is a curious and inquisitive little girl. She used to watch her neighbour, Cheeko, and she responds to the people who care for her. She is very quick, so must be watched carefully each time her area is opened for cleaning, food or water. As she is next to the kitchen, she loves to watch as meals are being prepared, and she chirps when she sees her favourite foods.
  • Favourite Activity: Rudy has been given many toys to play with and she seems to enjoy the challenge of some of the enrichment devices. She watches what is going on around her, and likes to bounce around her enclosure and swing on the hose that has been strung across her area. And of course, she loves dinner time!
  • Favourite Food: Rudy really seems to enjoy grapes, but unfortunately she rarely gets them now because of her diabetes. Mealworms and crickets are a hit as well as hard-boiled eggs and bell pepper.
