Old World Monkeys

Old world monkeys are those that come from Africa or Asia.

Baboons

Pierre

Pierre - an olive baboon

Birth date: 2004
Arrival date: ~2006

  • Previous home details:  Pierre came from a zoo in Quebec. We don't know anything about his life there, but he was part of a shipment of animals sold off from this zoo. However, he was not wanted by the buyer of the other animals. The dealer contacted SBFPS and Pierre came to the Sanctuary.
  • Condition upon arrival:  Pierre has always been in great shape - both physically and psychologically.
  • Progress: First of all, Pierre learned English - he only understood French when he arrived at the Farm! As well, Pierre did some clicker training with peanuts for a reward. By training him to shift between areas, it has made looking after him (feeding, changing water, etc.) a little less complicated. By rewarding him when he did what we needed him to do, we built trust between caregiver and baboon.
  • Personality: Pierre likes to know everything that is going on! He is always in his outside area when people arrive, and if you are carrying a bag, Pierre likes to know what is inside! He is very stubborn and strong willed.
  • Favourite Activity: Pierre loves his food, and he looks forward to hunting for the treats that have been placed in his enclosure after it has been cleaned.
  • Favourite Food: Fresh grass is a hit with Pierre, and he loves his daisies and lilacs too. And of course, he never refuses peanuts or grapes.

Johnny

Arrival date: 2019-07-26

  • Previous home details:  Johnny and Judy came together. They were rescued from a zoo in Quebec that was closed due to abuse and neglect of over 200 animals.
  • Condition upon arrival:  They arrived at the sanctuary without names and both were particularly frantic at mealtimes - a sign that they probably were not fed regularly.
  • Progress: Over time they have become a little more discriminating with their food no longer eating banana skins. However, unlike any other monkeys at the sanctuary, they never leave any food behind. Johnny is though very dominant at meal time so we have to be creative to make sure that Judy gets her fair share of food.
  • Personality: Johnny is very dominant in all aspects of life with Judy.
  • Favourite activity: Eating.
  • Favourite food: Anything, but they will eat their favourite foods first.

  • Favourite activity: Eating.

  • Previous home details: Boo & Gerdie came from a laboratory in Ontario where it was important to the researcher that they be retired to live out their lives in safety and security and as comfortably as possible at the end of the research study. The researcher sought out Story Book Farm and arranged to have Boo and Gerdie take up residence here when their final results were recorded.
  • Condition upon arrival: Both animals were healthy and active. They are strong, curious and interested in what goes on around them.
  • Progress: Boo and Gerdie learned about so many new things. Flies were something they had not experienced before. Cats, dogs, other species of monkeys, all the sights and sounds and smells of the barn…and the great outdoors! They really love sitting in the sunshine. They have recently been moved into larger enclosures where they have more space to climb on ropes and platforms. They have explored every inch of their space and made the acquaintance of neighbours Max, Darwin and Lexy.
  • Personality: Boo is not very sure about trusting people and will become aggressive towards people on occasion. She is however the submissive one in her relationship with Gerdie. Both are very curious about everything around them, and have adjusted very well to their new life. And they are smart…they have enjoyed the enrichment devices they have been given, and have always succeeded in getting the treats!
  • Favourite Activity: The girls love to sit outside in the fresh air and sunshine and spend lots of time grooming each other. They spend a lot of time just looking around and evaluating everything they see and hear. They even like to be outside in winter. And of course, they love dinner time!
  • Favourite Food: While they both already loved bananas and mangoes on arrival, as well as yams and tomatoes, it seems that neither zucchini nor cucumber are especially liked.
  • Wish list from staff: They are smart, and have had some training in the past. We would like to use the training and expand on that in order to form some stronger bonds with them and make it easier for us to do our daily chores around them. Gerdie also loves mirrors, so stainless steel mirrors would be a great item for these two.

Darwin

Japanese macaque

Birth date: ~2012-05
Arrival date: 2012-12-10

  • Previous home details:  Darwin was born in Canada as part of the exotic pet trade in 2012, and had lived in a family home in Toronto. He was found in an IKEA parking lot in December 2012 after escaping from his owner's car and was seized by local authorities. A social media and worldwide news sensation, Darwin has resided at SBFPS ever since.
  • Condition upon arrival:  Darwin had been imprinted by humans, which rarely bodes well for a monkey. He was very insecure upon arrival, and needed to be the centre of everyone's attention. He was sheltered from the other monkeys until he got used to his surroundings.
  • Progress: Following his arrival Darwin grew in strides - learning to be far more monkey than human as he was surrounded by other macaques in the enclosures around him. He would mimic their vocalizations and learn how to speak macaque. He has grown in size and confidence as well, and was slowly transitioned towards having multiple caregivers who he can trust and love as his 'troop', as he had no real monkey mother to show him the ropes. He is now part of a family formed with Lexy and Maximus.
  • Personality: Darwin is a cheeky little guy, that's for sure! He loves to play all day, and is always bouncing off the walls with excitement, especially when his favourite people come to visit! He loves to play tricks on you when you're not looking, like any adolescent!
  • Favourite Activity: Darwin loves Curious George! He has a Curious George doll whom he takes to his pool to give a bath, and grooms him and tries to get him to drink. He loves swinging on his fire hose, and splashing in kiddie pools!
  • Favourite Food: Darwin loves grapes, dates and cherries - but cherries definitely top the list!
  • Wishlist from staff: Darwin can always use new and exciting toys.

Max

  • Previous home details:  Max has come from the exotic pet trade. As far as we know, he was kept in a small cage for most of his life. In April 2018 he was sold at auction, and was purchased by people who wanted to rescue him and who have been taking care of him since. They realized from the beginning he would be better off at a sanctuary with other monkeys of his own kind, and we were finally able to take him, with the hope of introducing him to Darwin who is about the same age.
  • Condition upon arrival: Very good. He has a great appetite and no health issues.
  • Progress: He spent the first few weeks in quarantine where he and Darwin could see each other and expressed curiosity and no animosity. Max has now joined Darwin and Lexy and they have formed a new family. Surprisingly, Max has become the alpha of the group.
  • Personality: Max is very respectful.
  • Favourite Activity: Foraging and swinging on his ropes. He also likes movies like Madagascar and Ice Age, and snuggling under a blanket.
  • Favourite Food: Mangoes and bananas.

Bella

  • Previous home details: Bella and Samson came together. They were rescued from a zoo in Quebec that was closed due to abuse and neglect of over 200 animals.
  • Condition upon arrival:  They arrived at the sanctuary without names but seemed to be happy together.
  • Progress:  Bella has welcomed Mishaa into their group. After having given birth at the zoo in Quebec and the baby was taken away from her, Bella has become a good adoptive mother to Mishaa.
  • Personality: Bella is quite dominant – perhaps she understands that Samson is a little debilitated because of acute arthritis – but he puts her in her place when she annoys him.
  • Favourite activity: Bella loves being outdoors at all times of the year, in all weather. She often has to be coaxed indoors in the evening.
  • Favourite food: The usual – grapes, bananas, peanuts.

  • Previous home details:  Bella and Samson came together. They were rescued from a zoo in Quebec that was closed due to abuse and neglect of over 200 animals.
  • Condition upon arrival:  They arrived at the sanctuary without names but they seemed to be happy together. Samson was diagnosed with severe arthritis when it was noticed that his movements were very slow and awkward.
  • Progress: Now that Samson has been getting pain meds and joint supplements, Samson’s arthritis is much improved and he is much more active. The addition of Mishaa to the group also seems to have positively affected him. He tends to spend more time with Mishaa than Bella does. Samson lets Mishaa jump on him and they play together. Sometimes all three of them can be seen grooming each other together.
  • Personality: Samson is a very gentle soul and, because of his arthritis, he does many things slowly and deliberately but Bella and Mishaa are both respectful towards him.
  • Favourite activity: Napping on his favourite log in the sun.
  • Favourite food: Grapes and peanuts.

  • Previous home details:  Mishaa was transferred from a zoo in Quebec because she was not accepted by the rest of the troop when her mother died during childbirth.
  • Condition upon arrival:  Mishaa was, understandably, quite shy and timid when she arrived at the sanctuary being without a mother and having been rejected by her troop.
  • Progress: We were very glad to be able to offer Mishaa an opportunity to become part of a family with Bella and Samson. She knows her place in the family pecking order, making way for Bella and Samson if they want to check out her dinner but she will, just as quickly, go and see what they have left behind.
  • Personality Traits: Mishaa has turned out to be very clever and resilient.
  • Favourite Activity: In addition to grooming and being groomed by Bella and Samson she loves to climb and swing in all the areas of the enclosures they share. She is a very active little girl.
  • Favourite Food: Bananas, grapes and peanuts and, like everyone else, anything sweet.
